Yes. If you feel stuck or are struggling to finish your project, I can read unfinished work to provide an opinion on what may be slowing you down or what readers may expect from the back half of the story.

I recommend writers have at least 30,000 words complete before requesting a beta read, or I may not have enough story to offer valuable notes.

Beta Reading FAQS

Beta reading is when early readers review a nearly finished manuscript to give feedback before publication. They highlight issues with pacing, characters, plot, or clarity. Authors use beta readers to see how their target audience will react, and lean on that feedback to guide future revisions.

Beta readers read an unpublished manuscript and report on their experience as a reader: what worked, what confused them, where the story lost momentum, and how characters and plot came across. Feedback is typically delivered as a written Reader's Report, in-line comments, or both.

The best time to work with a beta reader is after you've completed your draft and made your first round of revisions. If you're working with a developmental editor, finish that process, then bring your revised manuscript to a beta reader.

Beta readers are test readers for unpublished manuscripts. They provide feedback on the reader experience, including pacing, story, consistency and suspension of disbelief. A beta reader provides a reader’s point of view on what they enjoyed, where they were confused and how they felt about the manuscript as a whole.

I provide a Reader's Report covering pacing, dialogue, worldbuilding, and characterization, along with in-line comments where applicable. Every project includes a follow-up call to discuss the feedback and your next steps.

Professional beta readers usually complete notes within two to three weeks. Volunteer beta readers may take several weeks or months, depending on their schedule and convenience.

I will return a reader's report on the draft within 14 days, plus 1–3 additional days for work exceeding 120,000 words.

No. Beta readers provide a test reader perspective on unpublished work, but will not edit your draft line by line. A proofreader will review and correct errors in grammar, spelling or punctuation, but will not provide notes on things like characterization or reading experience. Beta readers do not provide line-level editing for grammar or structure.

Good writing is a skill, and so is good feedback. A professional beta reader offers objective, detailed insights on story, pacing, and character that friends or casual readers may miss. They understand genre expectations, spot weaknesses early, and provide actionable notes that help elevate your manuscript before costly publishing.

Beta reading feedback is subjective, audience feedback on an unpublished manuscript. The feedback focuses on the reader’s experience (e.g. what works, what’s confusing, where pacing lags, and standout moments). Feedback is often given as in-line comments or a reader’s report. ,

I provide my notes in a general reader’s report that reviews the story as a whole and in-line comments when requested.

Alpha reading is initial feedback done on a first draft or early version of fiction or non-fiction work. Beta reading is a final reader review before work is published. Alpha readers will provide high-level feedback with the knowledge the story is likely to be rewritten. Beta readers will provide more detailed feedback that points to specific parts of the draft

Work with a beta reader after working with a developmental editor but before a proofreader. Developmental editors will provide story-level notes that require revisions to major story elements. A beta reader will provide a reader perspective that may inspire additional rewrites. A proofreader will meticulously review your final draft for line-level grammar and spelling.
